UIIA Registration

What is UIIA?

The UIIA serves as the cornerstone contract in the intermodal industry, streamlining equipment exchange among water, rail, and motor carriers. Administered by the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA), it simplifies access to containers, chassis, and trailers, eliminating cumbersome contractual barriers for drayage drivers.

Understanding UIIA insurance requirements is paramount for intermodal trucking companies seeking access to ports and rail yards. These requirements typically entail:

– Auto liability coverage of at least $1 million, encompassing all company trucks.

– General liability coverage (for bodily injury, personal injury, and property damage) of $1 million per occurrence, often with a $2 million aggregate option.

– Cargo insurance, commonly set at $100,000 with a $1,000 deductible, subject to variations by equipment provider.

– Trailer interchange insurance, typically ranging up to $30,000, covering damages to non-owned equipment.

– Additional mandates may include Workers Compensation, Employer Liability, and specialized coverage, contingent on the equipment provider’s stipulations.

Moreover, registration is imperative for UIIA membership. Applicants must furnish essential company details such as name, address, contact information, SCAC code, active carrier status via FMCSA, and Tax ID or EIN.
