Broker Registration Process

New Applicants:

If you’re a broker registering for the first time, you’ll need to obtain broker authority through the FMCSA’s Unified Registration System (URS). Once you receive your MC Number, the application process requires the following steps:

For property brokers: Provide proof of insurance coverage through a Surety Bond (Form BMC-84) or Trust Fund Agreement (Form BMC-85) valued at $75,000.

For household goods brokers: Submit proof of insurance coverage via a Surety Bond (Form BMC-84) or Trust Fund Agreement (Form BMC-85) worth $75,000.

Complete Form BOC-3, Designation of Process Agent Form (brokers can designate themselves as their process agents in their respective State where they conduct contracts).

Expect an application processing time of approximately 4-6 weeks.

Existing Brokers or Carriers:

Entities with existing authorities or USDOT number registrations after December 12, 2015, will continue using existing forms and processes to update their authority or apply for additional authority.
