California Hazmat Registration
To legally operate certain types of vehicles in California, drivers must obtain a Motor Carrier Permit (MCP), serving as proof that they have registered their California Carrier Identification number (CA#) with the DMV. Here’s who needs an MCP:
- Anyone or any business transporting property for compensation, regardless of vehicle size or type. This includes courier services using motorcycles.
- Individuals or businesses operating commercial vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,001 pounds or more, whether for commercial or private purposes. Those hauling personal goods are considered ‘private’ motor carriers.
- Operators handling hazardous materials.
- Drivers of specific vehicle combinations exceeding 40 feet in length when coupled together, or those requiring a commercial driver’s license for operation. However, those pulling camp trailers, utility trailers, and trailer coaches are exempt from needing an MCP.
