DOT Number Registration and Updates

DOT Registration:

Starting  your journey to establish a thriving trucking business starts with obtaining a USDOT number. At Pacific Trucking Consultancy, we’re dedicated to providing comprehensive DOT number support to kickstart your venture seamlessly.

What exactly is a DOT number?

This essential identifier mandated by the government ensures the safe and compliant operation of your business. A USDOT number, issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), serves as a unique identification allowing FMCSA to monitor your company’s safety record, inspections, and audits.

Who requires a DOT number?

Any company engaged in interstate commercial transportation of passengers, cargo, or hazardous materials must register with the FMCSA and obtain a USDOT number. If your operations meet any of these criteria:

– Gross vehicle weight or combination weight of 10,001 lbs or more

– Transportation of more than eight passengers (including the driver) for compensation

– Transportation of more than fifteen passengers (including the driver) regardless of compensation

– Transportation of hazardous materials designated by the Secretary of Transportation

Then federal law mandates that you acquire a DOT number.

What documents are necessary for DOT number application?

To complete your DOT number application, gather your Employer Identification Number or Social Security Number, Dun & Bradstreet Number, and the names and titles of all company officers.

How to obtain a DOT number?

The process is conducted online through the FMCSA’s Unified Registration website. Expect to invest several hours in the application process, which can be complex and time-consuming, especially for first-timers. However, with Pacific Trucking Consultancy’s  expert guidance, you can navigate this process with ease and confidence. DOT Number Update:

When a trucking business changes its Legal Business Name, address, or other details, it’s crucial to promptly update its US DOT and Operating Authority records with the FMCSA. Additionally, FMCSA mandates that all entities under its purview update their information biennially.

Biennial Updates

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates that all entities under its oversight update their information every two years. This update is required biennially, even if your company’s information remains unchanged, has ceased interstate operations, or is no longer operational without prior FMCSA notification.

Deadline for Updates

Filing schedule: Each motor carrier or intermodal equipment provider must submit the appropriate form:

– Before commencing operations; and

– Every 24 months, following the schedule based on the USDOT number’s ending digit:

USDOT number ending in:

1: January

2: February

3: March

4: April

5: May

6: June

7: July

8: August

9: September

0: October

If the next-to-last digit of the USDOT Number is odd, update in odd-numbered calendar years; if even, update in even-numbered calendar years.
