IFTA Registration & Renewal

IFTA stands for the International Fuel Tax Agreement. It’s an agreement among U.S. states and Canadian provinces that simplifies the reporting of fuel use by motor carriers that operate in multiple jurisdictions.  IFTA registration allows qualified motor carriers to travel in multiple states or provinces and report and pay fuel taxes in a single jurisdiction, typically their base jurisdiction.  As a trusted trucking consultancy, we understand the intricacies of compliance within the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA). Through our services, we seamlessly facilitate IFTA registration on behalf of our clients, ensuring their adherence to regulatory standards while alleviating administrative burdens.

Qualification for IFTA

Qualification for an IFTA license is contingent upon operating a qualified motor vehicle within a jurisdiction participating in the IFTA agreement. A motor vehicle is deemed qualified if it meets specific criteria, including possessing three or more axles, having two axles with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms, or weighing 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms in combination with other motor vehicles. It’s imperative to note that vehicles utilized solely for personal purposes are ineligible for IFTA licensing. Furthermore, compliance with IFTA mandates necessitates adherence to various requirements, such as maintaining a physical presence in the base jurisdiction, registering qualified motor vehicles, fulfilling minimum travel distances within each member jurisdiction during the reporting period, and meticulously documenting fuel purchases.

Documents Required

During the application process, clients must furnish these documents: – Social Security Number – Federal Employer Identification (FEI) Number for business entities – License Plate Number (vehicles must bear an approved International Registration Plan license plate or an apportioned plate recognized across all states and Canadian provinces) – United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) Number (authorizing interstate commerce operations for hauling passengers or cargo) – Proof of Legal Residency These details are fundamental for facilitating the IFTA registration process and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. IFTA licenses typically expire at the end of each calendar year. So annual license renewal is mandatory, with clients receiving renewal reminders and requisite forms from IFTA authorities.
